India's capital Awakens to Toxic Smog After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents ten times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable levels.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous smog that blankets the city as the cold season sets in.

However earlier this year, the newly elected city administration petitioned the highest court to request a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judges approved the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many recording stations throughout the city recorded air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe readings seen during the festival in at least three years.

Regional Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the city have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particles in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Sources

The situation in the capital is resulting from a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand early mortalities per year in the city.
