Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
